Bar & Bat Mitzvah Twinning

Emunah’s Bar & Bat Mitzvah Twinning Programme offers a wonderful chance to enhance and enrich your special Simcha, while helping a young person living at The Emunah Residential Sarah Herzog Children’s Centre in Afula.  By “Twinning” we mean giving both the children in the UK and a child in Israel a way to connect through their Bar & Bat MitzvahsBat Mitzvah - Liora and Elisheva.  A lot of the children decide to write to each other and, eventually meet in Israel. Some children choose to undertake a fundraising activity such as a sponsored silence, or wash cars, bake cakes or climb a mountain! Others choose to make a donation themselves.  It really is up to you.

Sadly, many of the children in our care simply do not have the support of their own family networkMany come from backgrounds of poverty, abuse and neglect.  At Emunah the children find the love, support and encouragement they need to have a positive future.

Once a year Emunah holds a grand Bar & Bat Mitzvah Ceremony and Party for the children in Israel. These celebrations are funded through donations made to British Emunah. All the children in the Afula home who will turn 12 or 13 during the year take part in a year long programme in preparation for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. They are taken on outings, for example to the Kotel, which many have never been to before. They get a new outfit and are made to feel very special. This shows the children in our home that others in the UK care about them. This helps build vital self-esteem and confidence in children who have been neglected and abused in their early childhood.

We cannot of course guarantee that the children will get in touch, sometimes they don’t find it so easy but more often than not the children gain a special connection. Through the twinning programme we can show young people here in the UK a very different side of Israel, deepening their understanding of the country and its people.  Please always remember that each child in our care has come from a troubled background and the twinning programme is ultimately for their benefit.
